Rank Math, on the other hand, is a friendly WordPress plugin that pats your post on the head and says, “Nice meta description!” before eating 300MB of your site’s performance.

After four years of using both, I can confidently say I use Semrush daily, and I disabled Rank Math faster than you can say “plugin bloat.” Between its mysterious data collection habits (I half-expected it to ask for my blood type) and its effect on site speed, I decided to let Semrush handle the heavy lifting.

It’s a complete marketing and visibility suite. Its job is to handle everything: in-depth keyword research, competitor analysis, backlink audits, site-wide technical health checks, content strategy, and paid ad tracking.

My core philosophy is this, Rank Math is a guide, while Semrush is an intelligence agency. A guide can follow a map, but an intelligence agency tells you where to build the map and why your competitor is building one elsewhere.

This is the primary point of overlap, and where my biggest issues with Rank Math began.

My Verdict:

My biggest complaint was performance. Having the Rank Math plugin active added a noticeable lag and bloat to my WordPress backend. It slowed down my post-saving and editing. Semrush’s SWA is a lightweight integration, and the main tool is external, so it has zero impact on my site’s SEO performance.

This is the classic “you get what you pay for” scenario. For a hobby blogger, Rank Math is a fine starting point. For any business, blogger, or affiliate marketer who depends on traffic, the data from Semrush is an essential, high-value investment. Ease of Use & UX (User Experience)

This is where my main critique of both tools comes in.

Rank Math: The Convenience and the Cost

Rank Math’s greatest strength is its convenience. It’s right there in your post editor.

However, this convenience comes at a cost. Many users, including myself, have concerns about plugin bloat. The plugin is loaded with modules, upsells, and features that can slow down your site.

More importantly, there are growing privacy concerns. Rank Math requires an account and sends data back to its servers (“phoning home”), which has raised transparency concerns among privacy-conscious SEOs.

Semrush, The Learning Curve of Power.

I’ll be the first to admit: Semrush is a busy platform. My initial feedback was that it’s challenging to navigate.

There is so much data to get through that it has a steep learning curve. It takes some getting used to to truly get the hang of it.

If you are a brand new blogger with a zero dollar budget, the Rank Math free plugin is a good place to start.

If you are a serious blogger or use affiliate marketing SEO tools, you need Semrush. You must be able to research what your competitors are doing and find keywords you can actually rank for.

Agencies & SEO Professionals

This is not a serious question. No professional agency or SEO consultant can run their business using only Rank Math. They need the robust, data-driven, and client-facing reporting tools of Semrush.

Local Businesses

A local business will get more value from Semrush. Using its Listing Management tool (for local SEO and syncing your business’s info) and its Position Tracking tool (to see how you rank vs. your local competitors) is far more valuable than an on-page checklist.

Why I Use Semrush and Disabled Rank Math

After using both tools for over four years, I disabled Rank Math for two simple reasons:

1. Performance: It slowed down my WordPress admin panel. Semrush is external and has zero impact on my site’s performance.
2. Superior Advice: The optimization opportunities Semrush provides are on a completely different level.
