Real SEO wins for high-trust industries
These are three YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) projects where the stakes are higher in finance and mental health. The common thread: clean structure, clear content, and trust signals that make both users and search engines feel confident.
Case Study #1 | Mortgages & Finance
NASB is a Midwest mortgage lender focused on purchase loans, refinancing, and VA lending. The business was solid and well-established; the problem was the website didn’t reflect that. It wasn’t pulling its weight in search, and it wasn’t converting the right visitors into qualified applications.
What was holding growth back
- The site experience felt dated, and content quality varied page to page.
- Organic traffic wasn’t trending up and visibility was basically stuck.
- High-intent mortgage and refinance terms weren’t ranking where they needed to be.
- Paid ads did the heavy lifting, but there wasn’t a long-term SEO engine behind them.
- Internal linking was thin, and there weren’t enough on-site tools/resources to keep visitors engaged.
- VA lending was a core offering, but there wasn’t a dedicated VA landing experience built for search intent.
What we changed (in plain English)
- Rebuilt the site structure so each page matched a real search intent (and a real user question).
- Rewrote and improved core mortgage pages to be clearer, more trustworthy, and easier to convert from.
- Created purpose-built landing pages including a VA lending hub designed to win and convert.
- Cleaned up technical issues that were slowing performance, especially on mobile.
- Strengthened internal linking so Google (and users) could actually find the right pages.
- Added helpful tools and educational content to keep people engaged and moving forward.
$30K → $200K / mo
Scaled monthly residential mortgage revenue attributed to organic search.
$3.0M → $5.2M
Residential closing fees grew from 2013 to 2017 (+73%).
Timeline clarity – During my time at NASB, I contributed to the expansion of the mortgage division and the broader growth initiatives that supported performance in that period. I left the organization in 2018. Several years later, NASB announced it would, exit its consumer direct lending business in January 2023. I was not employed by NASB during that later period and had no role in the strategic decisions, operating changes, or staffing actions associated with that transition.
Case Study #2 | Business Financing
AdvancePoint Capital is an alternative lending provider (small business loans, merchant cash advances, and working capital). They were doing plenty of volume, but too much of the growth depended on expensive PPC in a crowded fintech market.
The challenges
- PPC costs were climbing fast (some business-loan queries exceeded $70/click).
- Modest authority meant non-branded rankings were limited.
- Well-funded competitors occupied the best positions in search results.
The approach
- Targeted high-intent, non-branded terms with realistic ranking pathways.
- Built content that answered borrower questions clearly and honestly.
- Improved internal linking to connect informational content to conversion pages.
- Earned authoritative backlinks through PR, partnerships, and niche placements.
- Created landing pages designed to convert across products and markets.
4×+ in 4 months
A stronger inbound pipeline with lower reliance on paid acquisition.
+200%
Expanded non-branded coverage across intent stages.
DR 20 → 28
Improved trust signals to compete in a tight market.
Case Study #3 | Mental Health
Health SEO is thankfully held to a higher standard. This practice needed to show up for “near me” searches, but the website didn’t communicate enough expertise or trust to compete in a sensitive category.
Starting point
- ~500 monthly organic clicks.
- Domain rating 13 (tough to win visibility in health SERPs).
- Minimal content strategy and thin pages that didn’t meet E-E-A-T expectations.
- Inconsistent local presence (rarely surfaced in the local pack / Maps).
What we focused on
- Professional-reviewed content built to be accurate and genuinely helpful.
- Local SEO foundation: GBP optimization, citations, and location pages.
- Authority growth through reputable links and topical depth.
- On-page improvements: clearer intent, better headings, stronger internal linking.
500 → 30,000+ / mo
Growth achieved over ~24 months using a YMYL-safe strategy.
13 → 40
Lifted credibility through targeted, high-quality link acquisition.
1M+ pageviews/year
Built local pack visibility and national content reach.
My YMYL SEO Approach
In YMYL categories, SEO is judged differently. You have to earn trust, not just attention. My approach stays consistent: make content easy to understand, back it with credibility, and build a site experience that feels professional on every device.
Content that feels trustworthy
- Write for the decision being made, money, health, safety, and absolutely not for “traffic.”
- Be clear, specific, and honest. Avoid vague filler or inflated claims.
- Keep pages updated when guidance, policies, or markets change.
Credible sourcing
- Use reputable references: regulators, major institutions, medical orgs, etc.
- Support key statements with data, citations, and practical explanations.
- Remove or replace pages that can’t meet quality standards.
Performance + structure
- Intent match, clean internal linking, and a clear path to conversion.
- Technical health: crawlability, Core Web Vitals, mobile UX.
- Authority: high-quality links and recognizable expertise signals.
